Chat with Girls You Have Not Met
Talking to someone you have never met is a skill, and a small one — four moving parts, all learnable in an evening. Most people who conclude they are "bad at this" are actually just opening badly.
Everything below applies to video chat with strangers specifically, where you get about ten seconds and a face rather than a message box and a day to think about it.
Openers That Work, and Four That Do Not
The first ten seconds decide most video chats. Not because people are harsh, but because there is nothing else to go on yet.
“Where are you from?”
Easy to answer, and the answer is usually interesting enough to build on.
“What time is it there?”
Immediately establishes that you are in different worlds, which is the whole appeal.
“What is that behind you?”
Specific, observant, and impossible to answer with one word.
“Is it warm where you are?”
Sounds like small talk, works like an invitation. Weather is universal.
"Hi"
Gets a "hi" back and puts the work on the other person. The second most common reason chats end in ten seconds.
A compliment about appearance
The first thing everyone says, and therefore the least interesting. It also frames the conversation as an assessment.
Asking for another platform straight away
Reads as wanting to leave, before there is any reason to.
Silence
The most common reason of all. Ten seconds of nothing is longer on video than it feels.
Keeping It Going Once You Talk to Strangers Regularly
The trick is not being interesting. It is being curious, out loud. Every answer someone gives you contains the next question — a country contains a city, a city contains weather, weather contains what people do there in August. Follow the thread rather than reaching for a new one, and a two-minute chat becomes a twenty-minute one without anybody working at it.
Two things help more than any script. Light your face, so the other person can read your expression — half of a conversation is visual and a dark room throws it away. And leave the pauses alone; filling every silence reads as nerves, sitting through one reads as ease.
Longer version, with forty specific questions sorted by depth: questions to ask someone you just met online.
Leaving Well
Nearly every chat ends, and most end quickly. That is the format working, not failing. What separates a good exit from a rude one is about two seconds of effort: say that it was nice to talk, and then go. Nobody is owed an explanation, and nobody expects one.
If a conversation is not just unpromising but uncomfortable, you do not owe even that. Skip ends it immediately, block stops the person coming back, report sends it to moderation. All three are in the chat, and the Safety Center covers when to use which.
Girl Chat: Common Questions
Mostly asked by people about to do it for the first time.
How do I start a conversation with a stranger?
Ask a specific question about them. "Where are you from" outperforms everything else because it is easy to answer and the answer opens a door. Openers about appearance close one.
What do I do when I run out of things to say?
Ask about what you can see — the room, the weather, the time. Or say so honestly: "I have no idea what to ask next" is disarming, and usually gets a laugh and a rescue.
How do I end a chat politely?
"It was nice talking to you, have a good night." Two seconds, and it is the entire difference between skipping someone and being rude to them. Both of you knew it would end.
Is it rude to skip someone quickly?
No. Everyone is doing the same thing and nobody takes it personally. Being skipped is information about fit, not about you.
What should I never tell a stranger?
Surname, address, workplace, school, other account handles, and anything financial. A first name is plenty for a good conversation. There is a full list in our guide on what never to share online.
