A browser tab is not a compromise any more — an online video call runs on the same technology as the calls you already take for work, and it has done for years.
What You Need
What the Camera Permission Actually Grants
The browser asks once, and people reasonably hesitate. What Allow means here: this tab may use the camera and microphone while it is open, for the call you are in. It does not mean recording, it does not reach your photos or files, and it ends when the tab closes.
It is also reversible. The padlock or camera icon in the address bar lists every permission that page has and lets you withdraw any of them without leaving. If you would rather see what the site is before granting anything, nothing on this page or the rest of the site needs a camera to read.
When Something Does Not Work
Five symptoms cover almost every report we see.
The other person cannot see you
Your browser is blocking the camera. Tap the padlock or camera icon in the address bar and set the camera to Allow, then reload. On iOS, check Settings → Safari → Camera as well, since the OS can override the site setting.
You can see them but hear nothing
Almost always the phone silent switch or a paired Bluetooth device that is still holding the audio route. Check the switch first, then disconnect the headphones and try again.
The video keeps freezing
Bandwidth. A call needs roughly 1 Mbps up and down for a smooth picture. Move closer to the router, or switch off Wi-Fi and use mobile data — congested Wi-Fi is often worse than a decent 4G signal.
The camera works elsewhere but not here
Another tab or app already has it. Browsers hand the camera to one place at a time; close the other video call and reload this page.
Everything is dark
Not a bug — a webcam sensor is much smaller than a phone camera and needs far more light. One lamp in front of you fixes it entirely.

Do I need to download anything for video chat?
No. Omigirl runs in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer. There is no app to install and no app-store account involved.
Which browsers support video chat?
Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox and the Chromium browsers built on them, on both desktop and mobile. If your browser has been updated in the last couple of years, it works.
How much data does a video chat use?
Roughly 300–500 MB an hour at normal quality — comparable to streaming video. On a limited mobile plan, that is worth knowing before a long conversation.
What does allowing the camera actually give the site?
Access to the camera and microphone while that tab is open, for the call you are in. It is not recording, and it is not access to your photos or files. Closing the tab ends it, and you can revoke it from the same padlock icon at any time.
Does a video call cost anything?
You get some free calls when you start — the number is governed by our anti-abuse checks rather than published as a fixed figure. After that, calls are paid, and the rate depends on who you are talking to, since each person sets their own. You are warned before charging begins.
Can I use video chat on a work or school network?
Often not — many block the ports that live video needs. A mobile connection is the quickest test of whether the network is the problem.
